Following Soccer Results and Big-Match Talking Points from Los Angeles

The title on this page points to a familiar story in Major League Soccer: a club that had been riding a strong run suddenly drops a match, this time against New York City FC, and fans and pundits immediately start asking whether it is a one-off blip or the start of a slide. That kind of question is part of what makes following a long league season so absorbing, and it is just as lively a conversation in Los Angeles, home to two MLS sides, LA Galaxy and Los Angeles FC.

A single defeat rarely tells the whole story. When a team loses after a good stretch, it helps to look at a few things before deciding the season is in trouble:

  • Context of the fixture: away games, short turnarounds between matches and travel across time zones all affect performance in a league as geographically spread out as MLS.
  • Squad availability: injuries, suspensions and international call-ups can leave even a strong side thin for a week or two.
  • Underlying performance: chances created and conceded often say more than the scoreline. A narrow loss in a match a team largely controlled is different from being outplayed.
  • The table over time: MLS uses a conference format with playoffs, so a dip in form matters most when it lasts across several matches.

For anyone watching from Southern California, matchdays are also live events in their own right. If you plan to see a game in person, check the club's official channels for kick-off times and tickets, buy from authorised sellers only, and plan your route early, as traffic and parking around stadiums can be heavy on game nights. Our guide to LA venues offers general pointers on getting around the city's major event spaces.

If you prefer to follow the action from home, keep an eye on our schedule for the live entertainment and event coverage we highlight, and browse the archive for earlier stories. Whether a result turns out to be a blip or a turning point usually only becomes clear a few weeks later, which is exactly why the season is worth following match by match.
