Making Calming Scented Candles at Home
Homemade aromatic candles are one of the easiest crafts to pick up, and they make a relaxing project for a quiet evening in, perhaps with a recorded concert or a favorite show playing in the background. You need only a handful of supplies, most of which are sold at craft stores.
What you need
- Wax: soy wax is popular with beginners because it melts at a fairly low temperature and cleans up with warm, soapy water. Beeswax and paraffin are common alternatives.
- Wicks: pre-tabbed cotton or wood wicks sized for the diameter of your container.
- Fragrance: candle-safe fragrance oils or essential oils. Lavender, chamomile, cedarwood and eucalyptus are classic choices for a calming scent.
- Containers: heat-resistant glass jars, tins or ceramic vessels.
- Tools: a double boiler or a heatproof pouring pitcher set in a pot of water, a thermometer, and something to hold the wick upright, such as a clothespin or a wick bar.
Step by step
- Secure the wick to the center of the container's base with a wick sticker or a dab of melted wax.
- Melt the wax gently over simmering water, never over direct heat, and keep an eye on the thermometer.
- Take the wax off the heat and let it cool slightly before stirring in the fragrance. Follow the wax manufacturer's guidance on temperature and fragrance load, since too much oil can cause sweating or a weak burn.
- Pour slowly into the container, center the wick and leave the candle to set undisturbed at room temperature.
- Trim the wick to about a quarter inch once the wax has hardened. Many makers let candles cure for a few days to a couple of weeks so the scent can develop fully.
Safety tips
Work in a well-ventilated space, keep a lid nearby in case wax overheats, and never leave melting wax or a burning candle unattended. Keep candles away from curtains, pets and children, and burn them on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Some essential oils can bother pets or people with sensitivities, so check before choosing your blend.
Once your candles are ready, light one up and settle in with something from the archive, or see what's coming next on the schedule.
