American-Made Tools Behind the Scenes of Live Production
Every concert stream or stage show depends on gear that crews trust night after night, and a surprising amount of it is still designed and built in the United States. For anyone curious about the hardware side of live entertainment, here are eight kinds of tools that American manufacturers continue to produce and that show up regularly on stages, in trucks and on broadcast desks.
- Hand tools for riggers and stagehands. Wrenches, sockets and pliers from long-established US toolmakers remain a staple in road cases, valued for durability and lifetime warranties.
- Gaffer tape and cable management. Domestic tape makers supply the cloth tape crews use to secure cables without leaving residue on stage floors.
- Microphones. Several well-known microphone brands have deep American roots, and some models are still assembled in the US for touring and broadcast use.
- Loudspeakers and studio monitors. American audio companies continue to build speaker systems used in clubs, theatres and recording rooms.
- Road cases. Custom flight cases are often fabricated by regional shops close to the productions they serve, including in Southern California.
- Lighting fixtures and controls. A number of stage lighting products are engineered and manufactured domestically for theatre and concert work.
- Cable and connectors. US-made audio, video and power cable is common in installations where reliability matters more than price.
- Ladders and lifts. Fiberglass ladders and personnel lifts used in venue maintenance are frequently produced by American firms.
Why it matters to live events
For production teams, buying locally made gear can mean shorter lead times, easier access to replacement parts and direct support from the manufacturer. Country-of-origin labels can be complicated, though: a brand may be American while specific products are made abroad, so it is worth checking each item's details before assuming where it was built.
