Planning a night at the Bowl
The Hollywood Bowl sits in a natural hillside bowl just off the 101, and much of what makes an evening there memorable comes down to preparation. The amphitheater opened in the early 1920s, and its concentric band shell has been rebuilt several times over the decades. Today it is one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the United States, with seating that climbs steeply from the front boxes up to the benches near the top of the hill.
Seating and sightlines
The boxes nearest the stage come with small tables and are a long-standing tradition for picnicking before the music starts. Further up, the terrace and bench sections offer a wider view of the hills and the stage at a distance, with video screens helping out for larger shows. Upper sections involve a fair amount of walking uphill, so comfortable shoes are worth it. The hillside cools down quickly after sunset, even in midsummer, so many regulars bring a light jacket or blanket.
Picnics and food
Picnicking is part of the Bowl's identity, and there are designated picnic areas around the grounds as well as on-site food options. Rules on outside food and alcohol can differ between events, especially between classical programs and leased concerts by touring promoters, so check the event listing and the venue's official policies before you pack a basket.
Getting there and getting home
Parking near the venue is limited and stacked, which means leaving can take a long time once the show ends. Many visitors use park-and-ride shuttles or the Metro B Line to Hollywood/Highland, then walk or connect to a shuttle up Highland Avenue. Whatever you choose, plan to arrive early: security lines and the climb to your seat take longer than most first-timers expect. Our schedule page flags major Bowl dates so you can plan around the busiest nights.
